Madeira: 18 September 1990 “Walked into Funchal then by taxi to the Botanical Gardens which are quite high up giving a wonderful view over Funchal and out to sea. Then a storm blew up and we saw rain like we had never before. Cars were water-logged and it was quite chaotic” 20 September 1990 “We decided to go up to Monte today and came down in the Madeira version of the Cresta Run. This was a wicker toboggan pulled or guided by two men – what a hard way to make a living – they must be super fit”
