The Women’s Social and Political Union was founded in 1903 because some women, led by Emmeline Pankhurst, were frustrated by the low key approach to campaigning and felt they should be more militant. They felt only militant tactics would work. Hilda Dallas designed this front cover of the newspaper, incorporating the green, purple and white colours and using the image of Joan of Arc, the patron saint of suffragettes
